Welcome from the Editors

The 63rd Annual Mid-Year Conference of the American Society of Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Engineering Design Graphics Division (EDGD) offers an opportunity to learn from colleagues associated with engineering design graphics, interact with professionals from academia and industry, and enjoy a community that prides itself on being a city with a small population and a big reputation—Berkeley, California. We hope you’ll take advantage of Berkeley, the bay area, and its surroundings before, during, and after the conference. Ease back, relax, and become a part of history—you’ll be glad you did!

Graphics Education in an Electronic Age is the official publication of the EDGD’s 63rd Annual Mid-Year Conference. These proceedings are a result of much behind-the-scenes hard work on the part of the authors; an ad hoc review board; and Dennis Lieu, this year’s Mid-Year Conference General Chair. When you get a moment, extend a note of appreciation to each.

To the authors of the papers, thank you for your patience with us during the review process, during the preparation of your papers, and for meeting the various deadlines. As if you don’t already have enough to do after having achieved this milestone, we’d like to assign one more task. When you get back, submit your paper for review and publication in the Engineering Design Graphic Journal, the official publication of the Engineering Design Graphic Division of ASEE. Paper and submission guidelines appear at http://edgd.asee.org/journal/paperguidelines.htm

Thanks must also be extended to our Division colleagues, who made up the ad hoc review board. The ad hoc review board members included Frank Croft, Jon Duff, Tim Sexton, and Mike Stewart. They reviewed the abstracts and made recommendations to us on the composition of this year’s program. Final responsibility for the program however rests with the technical program co-chairs.

These proceedings came to fruition because of Dennis’ suggestions, persistence, and patience. We could not have asked for a more engaged individual with which to work—thank you Dennis.

Finally we’d like to extend a note of thanks to Cody Skidmore, a Master’s of Science in Technology Systems (Computer Security) graduate student at East Carolina University, who was responsible for much of the proceeding’s grunt work.

Any irregularities, editorial or procedural, rests with us, for the outcomes are a result of decisions for which we must bear total responsibility. Feel free to direct any suggestions for improvement to Dennis; the EDGD Director of Programs, Mike Stewart; or either of us.

  • 3117 Etcheverry Hall – Special Workshop – Adopting a Spatial Visualization Curriculum, Sorby and Veurink

Spatial visualization skills are vital to many careers and in particular to STEM fields, and research has shown the spatial skills of women often lag behind those of men. This workshop will provide participants with the Spatial Visualization Curriculum used at Michigan Technological University to improve the spatial skills of engineering freshmen, particularly women. Participants will be shown how to teach the curriculum and given lecture presentation materials and a spatial visualization workbook with software that can be used in the classroom. The workshop will show participants why they should incorporate the curriculum and offer suggestions about ways to adapt it to meet their own needs. Please reserve your place at this workshop on the Workshop Registration Form.

All workshops will be offered at no cost to registered attendees of the Meeting.
